Sleep

I regularly give talks on the importance of sleep and its contribution to good health and people are often surprised about how essential it is. I explain why we need to treasure sleep as it is essential for memory, learning, recovery, vitality, hormone health, appetite weight, weightloss and much more. The list of all the reasons why we need good sleep is very long, yet many of us don’t pay much attention to it, not prioritising it or looking to improve it, if it is a problem. I would love to help you so message me if you would like to work with me to improve your sleep.

Here are my Top Tips to improve your sleep

  1. Your sleep depends on what you do during the day. So working all day long, no breaks, no time outside, stress ratching, eating poorly and no social interaction will all impact your sleep. Think about your daily routine and what needs to be attended to, to sort out your sleep.

  2. Go to bed on time… saying you are tired during the day but still up after midnight watching TV or online, just doesn’t make sense. Life is short, go to bed and be able for all that life offers you.

  3. Your room needs to be cool and dark. A bath helps before bed because your body moves to cool itself after a hot bath. Same for a hot water bottle.

  4. Stop doing busy work 2 hours before bed. That means no spreadsheets no presentations - stimulating your brain is the opposite of what you need in the lead up to bedtime. Instead signal sleep with a bedtime ritual like a cup of caffeine free tea and a small snack IF you are hungry.

  5. If you can’t get to sleep, don’t toss and turn, if you are still awake after 30 minutes, get out of bed and quietly read a book, empty the mind by making a list of all that is keeping you awake or try our top to toe relaxation exercise to get the body relaxed.

  6. If you regularly wake in the middle of the night with a racing mind, then you may be stressed or feeling anxious. Stress needs to be dealt with and Heartmath is a wonderful reviving technique for dealing with our stresses and enabling improved sleep.
